This year for Christmas, someone gave me a four-movie DVD set of BBC adaptations of Dickens novels. David Copperfield, The Pickwick Papers, Dombey and Son, and The Old Curiosity Shop. I started David Copperfield this morning. It has little Daniel Radcliffe in it, and Bob Hoskins, and Ian McKellen, who's doing such a good job he's freaking me out.
The movie's skimmed over some parts a bit, of course; we barely met Steerforth. Pickwick is one of my favorite Dickens novels, and I think that I'll watch that movie last, because I haven't built up enough faith to trust that they'll do it the way that I want it done. But Copperfield is going well; I detest the Murdstones, and I can't wait to meet Uriah Heep.
The last time I tried to watch a Dickens movie, it was Ethan Hawke's version of Great Expectations, and I really don't remember finishing it. |
