Alpha Dog [Jan. 12th, 2007|06:32 pm]
Yeah, I saw it. I'm pretty conflicted about it.

Reaction #1: It's a great movie. Terrific casting. Ben Foster can act. Justin's fantastic - - we knew that he would be - - and it's always nice to see his half-naked body. (It's also fun to look for re-shot scenes, where Justin's clearly older.)

Reaction #2: Although the names were changed, this movie is based on reality. It's not a documentary, but the people involved were interviewed and were paid consultants for the film, Justin and the director went to jail to visit the guy Justin plays, the director got the prosecutor's files, etc. This really happened. A fifteen-year-old boy truly was murdered. This isn't all fun and acting and movies; this is real. People really do live those lives, and when a boy is kidnapped and we're only shown one person calling it "wrong," there's a problem here. More than one.

It's not like going to see a hot new movie about rich white kids who get high and get laid and screw up their lives. It's not a serious version of American Pie with guns. It's not about hey, isn't Justin hot, because yes, of course Justin's hot, but a boy was murdered, and when one person actually goes to get help, her mother's high and can't be bothered to care.

Sure, the boy himself didn't take it seriously. Because he's a kid and he doesn't know any better. What's everyone else's excuse?

Yeah, Sonny Truelove is right; it's about parenting. Because actions have consequences, but these people either learned that way too late, or not at all.
