James [Jan. 18th, 2007|02:17 pm]
I updated "Sucker" yesterday over at Sweet Uncleanness. http://www.matthewtime.com

"Living" and "Sucker" have pretty much nothing to do with each other in a lot of ways, yet they cross paths in some of the oddest sections of my brain. For instance, "Living" readers may remember the James connection from when AJ and Lance were together. Then, in "Sucker," when Howie and JC fight over Lance but don't want to admit as much to Erik, they refer to Howie's ex-boyfriend as James.

Then, in S85, Joey brings up Jimmy:

He hung out with Joey for a while. They talked about Vegas; Joey had been there more often than he had, and told him several crazy stories that all ended up involving a lot of alcohol and a lot of sex. A bunch of them involved some friend of Joey’s named Jimmy who seemed to be even more aggressive about sex and liquor than Joey was, which Ashley hadn’t thought was possible.

“I’d like to meet Jimmy sometime,” he said. Sober, if at all possible. With a cop nearby.

“We had a couple fights,” Joey said, “and I haven’t seen him in a while. But Nick will be there, and I’d better tell him about you.”

Now, we all know that in my slash, I'm not likely to bring up a random side character unless he's crucial to the plot. (If you've read "Living," you probably remember, from twenty years' worth of plot, about three people who aren't in a boy band, and one of those three is Aaron Carter. Another one doesn't even have a line. So, yeah: not so much with the non-famous characters.)

Jimmy, then, is either related to the plot already at hand, or about to make a major appearance. He's someone Joey used to party with in a pretty serious way, yet Joey's kind of vague about their falling-out. He's also named Jimmy. Who does Joey know with that name? Jimmy. Short for James. James like Lance? No, that wouldn't make sense. James like...AJ?

Now, we all know that Ashley isn't going to figure out about Joey and AJ's relationship unless it's explained to him with diagrams and photographs. So Joey could casually drop "Alex" in there and Ashley wouldn't think anything of it. (He could probably say "AJ" and, if Ashley asked, say, "No, AJ Smith," and Ashley would decide to go along with it.) Yet Joey goes with "Jimmy." That's another signal to me of how seriously and how personally Joey takes his relationship with AJ, how protective he is of it.

On the other side, though, here we have Joey openly reminiscing about his time with AJ. He's giving an edited version of events, to be sure, but he's telling AJ stories and sharing AJ memories. We haven't seen him do that much with the other guys. Does he feel safe in doing it now specifically because Ashley doesn't know the full background on his relationship with AJ? Is this a sign that Joey does want to talk about AJ, but feels that he can't with his friends? Is this a sign that he trusts Ashley in some way? Emotionally, maybe, to a certain extent?
